RTP explained: why it doesn’t predict your session

Return to player (RTP) describes a game’s theoretical return over a large amount of play. It doesn’t promise how much you will get back from a session.

A published percentage needs that context. Reading 96% as a promise to return £96 from your £100 deposit gives the figure a meaning it doesn’t have.

What goes into the calculation?

Actual RTP is calculated from recorded play:

Total prizes awarded ÷ total stakes × 100

The Gambling Commission defines turnover as all stakes, including winnings that are staked again. A deposit and total stakes are different amounts. Read the Commission’s RTP definitions.

For a simple, invented example, £950 in prizes divided by £1,000 in total stakes gives an actual RTP of 95% for those records. That calculation says nothing about how many people contributed, what each deposited or who finished ahead. It is arithmetic, not a game test or a forecast.

Theoretical and actual RTP

Theoretical RTP is the percentage built into the game’s mathematical design. Actual RTP describes results measured over a particular period.

Those figures can differ. The Commission’s monitoring guidance considers both the amount of play and the game’s volatility when assessing a difference. A single session cannot establish the game’s long-run return.

A losing run doesn’t make a win due

The Commission explains that previous wins or losses do not change the odds of a win on the current game of a random machine. It distinguishes these from compensated machines, which work differently. Read its explanation of random and compensated machines.

Don’t treat a shortfall against a published percentage as money a random game owes you. Continuing to gamble is not a way to recover a promised return.

What this explanation establishes

This explains the meaning of RTP. It does not verify any named game’s percentage or an operator’s deployed version. It also does not estimate an individual’s likely loss or recommend a game.
